4 Reasons You Don’t Need A Recruiter

Having worked on all sides of the recruitment process (employee, hiring manager, and recruiter) I fully realize that there is a tipping point when to hire an outside agency for a particular opportunity.  Each company and hiring manager has different thresholds, but below I’ll cover what I think are the most pertinent and offer my insight.  The list below itemizes when you probably don’t need a recruiter:

1. YOU HAVE PLENTY OF TIME

This is pretty obvious.  Whether you are a hiring manager that already has too much on your plate or you’re an HR manager with hundreds of ongoing searches going on at once, you’ll need to spend ample amounts of time in the hiring process.  If your company is like most, you’re going to have just enough time to send out a few direct connections on LinkedIn or reach out to some professional networks that you’ve built.  You’ll also post the jobs on your careers page as well as online job posts and that will yield some prospects–but after you sift through hundreds of resumes.  If you have time to devote to actively searching, reaching out or sifting through resumes you don’t need a recruiter.

2. YOU HAVE PLENTY OF CANDIDATES

4 Reasons You Don’t Need A RecruiterSelecting from a large candidate pool will allow you to be picky and to focus on other less obvious desires.  When hiring, it’s usually nice to have the opportunity to pick between a handful of qualified candidates.  You’ll surely have to review tons of resumes, talked to 15-20 prospective candidates and ultimately whittle it down to your top 3. If you can do this yourself or if your internal HR can accomplish this for you, then you probably don’t need a recruiter.  But if your search is difficult and you aren’t afforded the luxury of more than a few candidates, you likely can benefit from a recruiter.

3. THE MARKETPLACE ISN’T COMPETITIVE

When the marketplace is competitive, candidates that are interested in other opportunities likely are listening to many companies.  You’ll need to leverage your company’s key success factors and deliver a WOW reason to top candidates so they want to work for you over the other firms.  Can you compete with Google, Netflix, or whoever the named brand is in your industry?  Will a candidate give you the opportunity to tell them why your company is the place for them?  If you can do this, and you can gather enough interested candidates, then you won’t need a recruiter.

4. YOU HAVE ACCESS TO THE BEST RECRUITING RESOURCES

recruiting employeeEveryone will agree that using the latest/greatest tools, software, and processes will help produce a better result in almost anything you do.  The same applies to the hiring process.  If you don’t have access to the top-end paid search platforms and cough up for paid job slots that reach the most candidates, then you’re at a disadvantage.  As a starting point, everyone should leverage the job boards, LinkedIn and industry networking groups to find the right people.  But aside from posting and reaching out a few times, these are typically passive activities trying to catch active job seekers.  Sometimes those candidates are great, often times our clients tell us they simply want people that would be open to looking but aren’t active yet. If you’re willing to bank on catching an active candidate only, then you won’t need a recruiter.

IN SUMMARY

if you have enough time, commitment, and have the latest tools at your exposure the odds are that you will have a decent chance to avoid a phone call to a recruiting specialist.  However, if you’re like most busy employees, you’re already carrying a full workload and simply don’t have the time, tools or ability to squeeze in a exhaustive candidate search.  Therefore, hiring a capable agency focused only on your needs could be a wise investment.
